In a recent speech Minister Giles made an important announcement regarding upcoming changes that will provide Subclass 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage) visa holders with an extended timeframe to secure new sponsorship if they find themselves no longer employed by their original sponsor. Under the new regulations, TSS visa holders will have a generous period of 6 months to seek new employment as opposed to the previous 60-day allowance. This adjustment aims to provide a more realistic and practical opportunity for visa holders to find suitable sponsorship within a reasonable timeframe and without jeopardising their work rights.
The Minister emphasised that during this extended period, subclass 482 visa holders will retain their work rights, ensuring that they can continue to support themselves financially while actively pursuing new employment opportunities. This change reflects the government’s commitment to creating a more favourable and supportive environment for temporary skilled workers, recognising the potential challenges and uncertainties they may face in the job market.
It is important to note that these alterations are part of a broader strategy implemented by the government to address migrant worker exploitation. By providing an extended timeframe for visa holders to secure new sponsorship, the government is aiming to mitigate vulnerabilities and enhance the overall welfare and rights of temporary skilled workers in Australia. Although an exact date for the implementation of these changes has not been provided just yet, it is anticipated that they will be introduced once the relevant instrument/s are registered, ensuring that comprehensive details and guidelines are in place to facilitate a smooth transition and protect the interests of all parties involved.
